Days Of Our Decay

Dark Feather Ausgabe 7

Hello Noctem! First please tell our readers, who are you?

We are Darvius Noctem:  Vocals, Keyboards, Piano, Synthesizers, and Programming; and Demonika Demise:  Female Vocals and Choir Voices.

Your Music contains a good mix between Gothic and Industrial with some kinds of Metal with an interesting vampire-atmosphere. From what bands you are influenced, who are your faves?

Thanks. As far as favorite bands go, I'd say my faves are:  Deathstars, Dimmu Borgir, Marilyn Manson, Rammstein, The 69 Eyes, Cradle of Filth, Type O Negative, Nightwish, etc.  (I have a lot of favorites).
I know Demonika particularly likes (old) Nightwish, Tarja Turunen and Epica a lot (in addition to the ones previously listed).

Days Of Our Decay exist since 2002. What happened in all that time, so far I know you released two albums until now?

Actually, we have a total of 7 albums available.

I started the band back in 2002, but never really took it seriously until late 2005.  Before that, I was just recording demos on cassette tapes on a karaoke machine, haha.  Days Of Our Decay was originally intended to be a “band” and contain a full line up, but due to unreliable, and non-dedicated musicians, it ended up becoming a solo project, until 2007 (officially), and in many ways, it still is a solo project.  All the material that I recorded from 2002-2006 was either scrapped or modified, rerecorded and released through us in 2007.  Everything written from 2007 and on has been released accordingly.

Currently, we are working with (German) indie label: Window Black Records to release our upcoming album:  "Darkside Paradise," which has been done for quite a while now.  We have been holding on to it, trying to get a record label to back it and give it a proper release, so luckily for us it is all now working out for us.

Days Of Our Decay 1

Very interesting is your description of your music: elevator music for the dying! What is the main idea behind this, what means this slogan for you?

Before I seriously got into writing music, I used to write a lot of lyrics and poetry, and one of them was entitled: "Elevator Music For The Dying."  When I started Days Of Our Decay, that phrase just kept coming back to me and embedded itself into my head. I think it perfectly classifies our style of music.  Our music is dark, insightful, metaphorical, and at the same time, doesn't take itself too seriously.

How is from your point of view the situation today about the Gothic- and Metal Scene in Canada?

From our point of view:  Horrible.  Basically, there is no scene for Gothic music here.  It's very few, select bands doing what they love to do, being mocked by most and not getting much recognition.  Cities like Montreal (I hear) have a good scene for Gothic music.
Unfortunately, Gothic music is generally not appreciated over here by most people, which is why we are really pushing to play in Europe.  You guys are way more open minded when it comes to all genres of music.
As far as "metal" goes, Hardcore, Thrash and Melodic Death Metal pretty much rule the “metal scene”…I think?  I don’t know, I am not really part of that whole “scene.”

Days Of Our Decay 2

Please tell our readers, how to imagine a Days Of Our Decay Show?

Hopefully (for us), you guys will be able to experience it very, very soon ;)
All of our shows have had different reactions.  Sometimes people really get into the music and feed us that energy back, so we can put on a good show, but generally, I think people are confused how to react to our music.  They are not sure whether they should make out to it or mosh to it.
I think the best way to describe what we do is: Rough (but sometimes sensual), Gothic Sex, through music.  Haha.

What are your plannings for the future?

Well, we are releasing "Darkside Paradise" sometime in the beginning of 2010 and hopefully we will be out promoting the album through live performances, interviews, etc.  Luckily, we are also working with Kraeden Records (from Canada).  They will be handling all of our promotion and booking within Canada and The U.S.  We plan on (hopefully) coming to Europe by the end of 2010/early 2011 for some select shows or tour.

Ultimately - what were your best, bad and crazy experiences until now with Days Of Our Decay?
-At our second to last show, a guy offered to give me a blowjob, and (strangely) was at the front of the stage, cutting his chest with a razorblade during our performance.  At that same show, we were the only band that night to get an encore request; despite only having two vocalists onstage with the music backtracked…. at a “Metal” show, haha.

At one of our older shows, the people in the front row sang along with most of the songs, which was quite a compliment.

We threw a burned up, dilapidated, baby doll out into the crowd and people tore it apart.

We smashed an acoustic guitar at one show in between songs, which might have been a metaphor for something... but I don't know.

My old bassist wore a butcher's apron with fake and REAL blood on it.

I seem to always be dating whoever is the female vocalist at the time... haha.

Thank you very much for this interview, ,the last words are yours!:

I just wanted to take the time and thank you for this interview, it is greatly appreciated.  A message to all of our European fans: "Europe, we are coming for YOU!"  Also, pick up our (upcoming) new album: "Darkside Paradise," when it comes out.

Thanks, Darvius Noctem
